The MBGFC is affiliated with the Queensland Game Fishing Association (QGFA) and Game Fishing Association of Australia (GFAA) which celebrated its 75th year in 2012. MBGFC follows the QGFA rules and members are eligible to claim State and Australian records, both salt and freshwater species.

The club actively promotes members to go fishing and organises club rally days or fun fish weekends and also tournaments.   Members can fish throughout the year and accumulate “club points”, which can win a number of perpetual trophies across a number of categories for senior male, senior female and junior anglers.

MBGFC hosts its annual QGFA sanctioned “Back to Tanga” tournament each March. This tournament is based out of our facilities at Moreton Island and last year attracted over 100 particpants from across clubs in Southern Queensland and also from overseas.

MBGFC fully supports “tag and release” of fish species especially for marlin and sailfish and sharks. Club members can access tags as part of the world renowned NSW Fisheries Tagging Program for use and for each fish tagged accumulates club points.

The Club Fishing Rules and Information Booklet provides anglers with an excellent reference source for those starting out in gamefishing through to experienced anglers and skippers with a range of information covered from club specific rules, point scoring and annual prize categories to more general information such as:

  • Club “local waters” typical fishing areas and FAD locations;
  • Tagging
    • Tag types & best practice techniques;
    • How to complete tag cards & associated QGFA Activity Records (including submission to club weighmaster);
  • Eligible gamefish species list;
  • Marlin identification guide;
  • Fish length vs weight for a number of gamefish species; and
  • GFAA angling rules and equipment regulations.

The club’s rules allows anglers to accumulate annual club points for all gamefish species that are caught and released regardless of line class used (including braid) or water depth fished allowing for tag & release (T&R), measure & release (M&R) or leader & release (L&R) fishing. The club’s point scoring also provides annual points for fish that are captured using all “mono” line classes in any water depth.

In addition to gamefishing annual prize categories, the club also has annual prizes for a number of bottom fish categories – fishing in these categories is independent of line-class (braid can be used) and prizes are awarded based on fish length (fish can either be kept or released). The club rule book outlines how to make submission for entry into these categories using the MBGFC bottom fish entry form.

Annual Event Calendar
A fishing year for Moreton Bay GFC aligns with that of the QGFA and runs from 1st July to 30th June the following year. An annual event calendar has been prepared for the 2022/2023 fishing year. N.B. All events shown in the calendar are nominal planning dates only and subject to change (at committee discretion taking into account weather and other influencing issues). At the time of preparing the event calendar, the suggested “Back 2 Tangas” Comp date has not yet been applied for (or therefore sanctioned by QGFA).

Monthly fishing competitions (for anglers and boat skippers) are shown across the top of the annual event calendar – some of these are proposed to run over a number of months. Actual competitions (and proposed prizes) will be communicated to members via social media and
email. Proposed “Rally Days” are to be detailed closer to the respective dates & the committee seek input/ feedback from members at monthly meeting(s) in advance of the nominated Rally Days. Members wanting to be involved in “Working Bees” should contact the club secretary in
advance of the nominated working bee date(s) for details and planning.

Club Records
Moreton Bay GFC’s local waters have produced many angling records over the years (including Queensland, Australian and World Records). The club has recently reinstated it’s club records register for eligible gamefish species (using historical records registers) and will continue to update these records as club anglers continue to improve on the records set by those before them. The latest club record register is available for download – N.B MBGFC record categories are consistent with those currently used by QGFA & GFAA and are noted at the top of the club records register.

To be considered for a new Club Record, the captured fish needs to be an eligible gamefish species that was caught in MBGFC local waters by an angler who was a financial club member (whose membership saw them affiliated with QGFA) at the time of the capture. Submissions for club records (including proposed amendments to existing club records) should be made in writing to the club weighmaster.

Please contact the club weighmaster if the club’s certified hanging scales are required for a potential record claim.

Fish of the Month – April 2022
The Club’s monthly target species is any gamefish. The highest point scoring fish (any gamefish species) wins a $50 Boating & RV voucher.
